'Biff' students earn awards at broadcasting conference
Bloomfield Hills - Andover and Lahser radio broadcasting students won six first place awards, five second place awards and five third place awards from the Michigan Association of Broadcasters (MAB) at their annual conference held March 14 at the Lansing Center.
The MAB received 527 entries from 34 schools for their annual High School and College Broadcast Awards competition. WBFH students won 16 of the 25 awards given out in the high school radio division, including first place in six of the eight categories.
Andover senior Ryan Fishman won three individual awards: first Place, Public Service Announcement; first Place, Promotional Announcement; third Place (tie), Sportscast/Play by Play.
Andover senior Erin Kashawlic won three awards: first Place, Sports Public Service Announcement; second Place, Radio Air Check; second Place, Public Service Announcement.
Andover senior George Tunis won two awards: second Place (tie), Sports Public Service Announcement; second Place, Talk Show with Andover senior P.J. Wascher.
Andover junior: Wade Fink won two awards: second Place Sportscast/Play by Play; third Place, Promotional Announcement.
Lahser senior Rachel Fishman won first Place, Newscast.
Andover senior Jake Neher, Andover senior Nick Gallick, and Andover junior Kevin Qian won first Place, Talk Show.
Lahser senior Valenta Bedford won third Place (tie), Sports Public Service Announcement. Andover senior Lauren Edelman won third Place, Public Service Announcement.
Six WBFH students won first Place in the Large Group category: Ryan Fishman, Rachel Fishman, Tunis, Kashawlic, Fink and Edelman.
Four WBFH students won third Place in the Large Group category: Neher, Qian, Wascher, and Andover senior Marco Myerson.
Due to the number of awards won by WBFH students, WBFH was named the 2006 MAB High School Station of the Year and received a gold record award from BMI.
This was the fourth year in a row that WBFH won or tied for MAB Station of the Year. Station Manager Pete Bowers and Assistant Manager/Chief Engineer Randy Carr accepted the Station of the Year Award on behalf of their award-winning students.
WBFH Operations Manager Ryan Fishman was pleased with the performance of the Biff students this year compared to last year. "We won three, more total awards and one more first place this year which is impressive."
Motivational speaker Ron Bachman gave the keynote address at the awards luncheon.
